An Alias is a folder that opens the actual file or folder that it links to. It can be moved to any directory on your Mac, but the actual folder or file will remain in the original location. Now whenever you double click on the Alias, it will open the original file or folder which it is linking to. If at any time you wish to delete the Alias, simply move it to Trash and it will be removed. This will not delete the original file or folder, but will rather remove the shortcut you had created.
